African Women Empowered is a business that began in March 2014 to help African women learn job skills and find employment. Many of the women come from Burundi, Rwanda, and Tanzania before coming to the United States. Their stories of the dangerous and impoverished conditions from which they narrowly escaped are incredible. These women spent many years in refugee camps in Africa and most still have relatives in the camps. They are resilient women who want to make better lives for themselves and their families. Most of the ladies are enrolled in English classes and US Citizenship classes. Several have already become proud citizens of the United States. Through this business, they are learning how to use sewing machines, design and make jewelry, learn about running a business, and gaining other valuable skills that will help them provide for their families.
